The first TUDOR United SportsCar Championship event at Laguna Seca was hugely successful. Despite the split classes, and lots of yellow, there were several great battles on-track and on pit lane.
Laguna Seca truly plays to the strengths of the LMP2 machinery. Once the tires came in, some laps after those on the DP cars, the P2 cars were able to go toe to toe. If it weren’t for a mistake in traffic heading into the corkscrew, the OAK Racing car would been much more of a factor.
It was a blast watching the GTLM Corvettes and Vipers duke it out. The only thing missing was a Ford. Hopefully the Vipers’ success will force Ford to consider returning to international sportscar racing. Fingers crossed. Last lap fuel-drama was the story in GTD. Spencer Pumpelly ran out of fuel at the top of the hill, handing the win to the Turner Motorsports BMW. Pumpelly’s Audi managed to coast to the front straight but did not make it to the line.
All in all, a great start for this series. I am sure that the balance between P2 and DP machine will be finessed throughout the season. This race proved that it was possible to have such disparate machines race against each other and put on a great show.
